Soundtrack of the Month: Super Mario Galaxy

Hey folks!

Mario defines new physics.

It's time for a new feature here on Sound-Test - our Videogame Soundtrack of the month! Once a month from now on we'll be highlighting one of the best videogame soundtracks in our huge archive, pointing you in the direction of its page and showing off just exactly why it's our top pick for that month. Sometimes it will be a newly added soundtrack for a recently released game, while other times this feature'll point you in the direction of the best old soundtracks from years gone by.

This month, it's a new title.

The Super Mario Bros series is one that is truly synonymous with the development of gaming. Since the very first title in the 80s, the games have been led by the same core group of designers, most notably the creator of Mario himself, 'Shiggy' Miyamoto. However, it's not just the main designers who have stuck with Mario throughout the entire duration of his gaming career - in fact, the music for his latest game in the series has in fact been composed by the an who composed the original Mario soundtrack, and almost every major Mario release since - Koji Kondo.

Bee Mario can fly!
Koji Kondo's credits extend way past the Mario titles, though - he is in fact the man responsible for most of the 2D (and early 3D) soundtracks to Starfox and Zelda, and he has a significant involvement in the Super Smash Bros series of titles, and many of his tracks are expected to feature in the latest title in that series. While he still has a love of composing, his job at Nintendo these days sees him overseeing the soundtracks of many games, ensuring other composers' work is up to scratch, much as Miyamoto does with designing the game itself. Both, however, took the time out to work on this game as they would have in the 80's.

Featuring a full orchestra for some songs - a first for this series, Super Mario Galaxy's soundtrack does as the game does, taking the series into space, refreshing old tunes with a new zest and energy while providing the player with plenty of other sounds to hum along with as they play; though perhaps the most memorable tune from the game will turn out to be the theme for the first level 'Good Egg Galaxy', as was the case with Super Mario 64 and the original Super Mario Bros. Mr. Kondo has a real talent for making the first levels the most memorable, and that is as it should be - as they do often sum up the whole of these games.
